The Depth of His Wisdom

“Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!” Romans 11:33

God saved my soul through the wisdom of the stars. Let me explain.

During my freshman year of college, I was in terrible shape mentally and emotionally. Struggling to figure out who I was, what I wanted, and what life was all about. I kept digging a deeper and deeper hole for myself.

I tried to find pleasure in sin, but it never brought any lasting satisfaction. In fact it left me feeling empty. I tried to fit in with certain “cool” crowds where I thought I would find identity and belonging. I always felt less than and left out in their presence.

One night in the late winter of 1983, some friends and I did some drugs and thought it would be cool to go see the latest star show at the Morehead Planetarium on our campus. That night would change my life forever.

We were giggling in the back when the program came on and the narrator began to describe the beauty and expanse of the heavens. Not in any terms of faith or Intelligent Design, the program described the volume and size of stars and suns throughout our galaxy and beyond. It was mind blowing.

Then the program began to describe the consistency of the travel of the stars around our sun. At one point, I remember hearing that the stars had been traveling in their same orbit for thousands of years. It said the night sky we were seeing was exactly the same for people 6000 years ago as it was for us that night.

All I can say is that I was instantly sober, and in that moment my heart was yearning for God. The order, the wisdom, the majesty and beauty of the heavens were drawing me to the Creator like a huge magnet. I decided that night to accept an invitation by a friend from my dorm to join him and attend the upcoming Billy Graham crusade on our campus.

Hearing Dr. Graham communicate the gospel in simplicity and power brought me to my knees. A few weeks later, I surrendered to Jesus and received His gift of eternal life.

There was one thing that drew me to the Creator.  It was the depth of the wisdom and the knowledge of God visible in the heavens. I just had to know a God Who could create something as incredible and consistent as our solar system. The depth of space made me yearn for the deep things of God.

It was as if I could see the depth of the wisdom of God in His creation. The understanding and mind that was capable of fashioning such a wonder humbled me and stirred me. I wanted to know the God of the heavens.

One more thing, I wanted my life to make sense like those stars. Every year they did the same thing. Every season you could predict and trust that they would be in the same place. There was something soothing and comforting about that fact.

My life felt like it was spinning out of control. My heart felt alone, empty and pointless; but the God of creation reached out to me through a planetarium presentation on the stars and saved me for eternity. He brought order, peace and purpose to my lost and lonely heart. Blessed be His Name!

The heavens declare the glory of God (Ps 19:1). They also declare His wisdom and His power to create things beyond our comprehension. How deep is the wisdom of God? How deep is His knowledge? Deeper than the deepest ocean, deeper than all of the expanse of the heavens, for He holds the heavens in the palm of His hand.

“Who else has held the oceans in his hand? Who has measured off the heavens with his fingers? Who else knows the weight of the earth or has weighed the mountains and hills on a scale?”    Is. 40:12 NLT

I love the depth of the riches of the wisdom and the knowledge of God. They are unsearchable. His understanding is beyond human comprehension. We could not sound out the depth of the wisdom of God.

This week we will be exploring the depth of the wisdom of God. I pray that the Father helps you to explore His wisdom through His Word and by His Spirit. His wisdom is deep. His knowledge is deep. Don’t stay shackled to the simple things. Launch out like a rocket ship into the reaches of His wisdom like an astronaut launches into outer space.

There are infinite riches out there in the heart and mind of our incredible God. May you enjoy those riches for eternity.
